: there is no hard evidence that's happened with huawei, but the obama administration has been unwilling to take the risk. two years ago, when it appeared that huawei might land its first big american deal-- a $5 billion contract to build sprint's new 4-g wireless network-- the u.s. government stepped in. >> lewis: you had the secretary of commerce call the c.e.o. of sprint and lay out the u.s. concerns, say that the u.s. was really worried about huawei. and they would be a lot happier if sprint didn't do the deal. >> kroft: and sprint said, "okay." >> lewis: sprint said, "okay." >> kroft: since then, huawei has blanketed u.s. airwaves with commercials, and hired an army of lobbyists and public relations firms to help it get a foothold into the world's largest telecom market. >> lewis: they're determined. they're in it for the long haul. the line that most people think about is, mao had a strategy called "win the countryside, surround the cities, and then the cities will fall." and huawei seems to be following that maoist strategy. >> kroft: in the last couple of years, huawei has managed to ins

in the obama administration how are they prepping vp biden for this and how might he play things differently now as a result? >> there has to be more specific prosecution of the argument against mitt romney calling the romney team out on some of these specifics whether it's on tax cuts or on medicare. i think one of the interesting dynamics to watch in the vice presidential debate is there's a difference between what paul ryan believes and what mitt romney believes and that is on these, on some of these important issues about taxes and health care and medicare. so that's an area where you can imagine vice president biden working to press ryan on the details and the inconsistencies between the two of them. >> really interesting point. thanks so much. >>> coming up in our next half hour, round 2009 the presidential debate and how body language is so important in determining the winner. >>> breaking news from rome. there's a verdict in the trial of pop benedict's former butler. paolo gabriele was convicted this morning of leaking the pope's private papers to a wrournlist. he's been sentenced to

what happened in libya, does the administration see some vulnerability there as to what accusations may come out of that? >> well, there is a vulnerability. on the one hand as the obama campaign is saying mitt romney spoke too soon on libya, the republicans can say the same thing about the administration on libya. when susan rice, ambassador to the united nations came out and said this was an uprising, not a terrorist event. well, the story has changed since then. that's something now the republicans can point to. there is a vulnerability although everybody still believes on foreign policy that's far, far secondary to the primary issue of this campaign which is the economy. >> john, i want to ask you about mitt romney and his foreign policy advisers and how he would differ from president obama. there's an interesting piece "new york times" in the today by david sanger, what he says of mr. romney. beyond his critique of mr. obama as failing to project american strength abroad, mr. romney has yet to fill in many of the details of how he would conduct foreign policy toward the rest of the

president reagan did in the czech republic. president obama seems to have missed that. he comes into these things late. his own administration describes him as leading by following. you don't lead by following. if you're following, you're following. that's what we see in seyria. that's what we saw in libya, in egypt. and now we see tremendous confusion on the part of this administration about what's really going on in the middle east. you look at libya, it's a scandal. i mean, what happened with libya is an absolute scandal of the b biggest proportions. i think only because the campaign is going on is it being held back. the white house, it seems to me, knew there was real danger to that ambassador. not only did they provide the security necessary, it sounds to me that they reduced the security, which is astounding. i don't know if that's true. one congressman told me that. if that's true, that's astounding. >> you saw secretary of state madeleine albright call romney speech full of platitude and free of substance. >> i'm sure the former secretary of state would say that. the re
